This gene encodes a component of the NuRD (nucleosome remodeling deacetylase) complex located in the nucleus of human cells. It exhibits broad tissue expression and is involved in transcriptional regulation, possibly through chromatin remodeling.

One known target protein is p53, where deacetylation is linked to reduced growth inhibition in transformed cells, suggesting a role in metastasis regulation.
