Target Information
The jellyfish Aequorea victoria contains green fluorescent protein (GFP Tag) that emits light in its bioluminescence reaction. GFP is widely used as a reporter protein for gene expression in both eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms, and as a protein tag in cell culture and multicellular systems. As a fusion tag, GFP enables localization studies, tracking of protein movement, and analysis of subcellular compartment dynamics.
GFP is a 27 kDa monomeric protein that forms a fluorescent pigment autocatalytically. The wild-type protein absorbs blue light (max 395 nm) and emits green light (peak 508 nm) without requiring additional proteins or cofactors. Its fluorescence is stable and species-independent, making it suitable for diverse applications such as monitoring gene expression, protein localization, studying protein-protein interactions (yeast two-hybrid system), and measuring molecular distances via fluorescence energy transfer (FRET).
