Target Information
Periostin (PN), also known as osteoblast-specific factor 2 (OSF-2), is a disulfide-linked protein originally isolated as an osteoblast-specific factor. It is a secreted protein that binds heparin and acts as a ligand for integrins αVβ3 and αVβ5.
In preosteoblasts, Periostin functions as a cell adhesion molecule, promoting osteoblast recruitment, spreading, and attachment. It is predominantly expressed in the lower gastrointestinal tract, aorta, stomach, placenta, uterus, and breast tissues, but is upregulated in epithelial ovarian tumors and overexpressed in breast cancer.
Expression of Periostin is increased by BMP2 and TGF-β1. The protein contains a signal sequence, a cysteine-rich domain, four fasciclin-like repeats, and a C-terminal domain.
