Target Information
Periostin (PN), also known as osteoblast-specific factor 2 (OSF-2), is a disulfide-linked protein originally identified as an osteoblast-specific factor. It is a secreted protein that binds heparin and functions as a ligand for α(V)β(3) and α(V)β(5) integrins. In preosteoblasts, Periostin acts as a cell adhesion molecule and contributes to osteoblast recruitment, spreading, and attachment.
Periostin is primarily found in the lower gastrointestinal tract, aorta, stomach, placenta, uterus, and breast tissues. It is upregulated in epithelial ovarian tumors and overexpressed in breast cancer. Expression is induced by bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP2) and transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1).
The Periostin protein includes a signal sequence, a cysteine-rich domain, four fasciclin-like repeated domains, and a C-terminal domain.
