Target Information

Periostin (PN), also known as osteoblast-specific factor 2 (OSF-2), is a disulfide-linked protein originally identified as an osteoblast-specific factor. It is a secreted protein that binds heparin and functions as a ligand for αVβ3 and αVβ5 integrins. In preosteoblasts, Periostin acts as a cell adhesion molecule, contributing to osteoblast recruitment, spreading, and attachment.

Periostin is mainly expressed in the lower gastrointestinal tract, aorta, stomach, placenta, uterus, and breast tissues, and is upregulated in epithelial ovarian tumors and overexpressed in breast cancer. Its expression increases in response to bone morphogenetic protein (BMP2) and transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1). Structurally, Periostin contains a signal sequence, a cysteine-rich domain, four fasciclin-like repeats, and a C-terminal domain.
