Target Information
Human growth hormone (hGH) is a member of the somatotropin/prolactin family of hormones that play a key role in growth regulation. The GH1 gene, along with four related genes, is located at the growth hormone locus on chromosome 17, sharing a high degree of sequence identity. Alternative splicing results in five isoforms (approximately 19–24 kDa). hGH is produced by somatotroph cells in the pituitary gland and acts through cytokine receptor subfamily membrane receptors. It stimulates liver and other tissues to secrete IGF-1, promotes myoblast differentiation and proliferation, and enhances amino acid uptake and protein synthesis. Mutations or deletions in GH1 can cause growth hormone deficiency and short stature.
