Target Information

The tumor suppressor protein p53 is a sequence-specific transcription factor activated by cellular stress. It mediates cell cycle arrest or apoptosis in response to DNA damage or nucleotide starvation. p53 activation induces transcription of genes such as p21waf1, contributing to G1 or G2/M arrest. Structurally, p53 consists of:

• N-terminal transactivation domain
• Central DNA-binding domain
• Oligomerization domain
• C-terminal regulatory domain

Phosphorylation of specific residues (e.g., Ser15, Ser392) plays a critical role in p53 activation, stabilization, and tumor suppression. Mutations in TP53 are common in various cancers and are associated with loss of tumor suppressor activity. p53 also relates to aging, oxidative stress, and learning/memory processes.
