Target Information
The SMN complex plays a catalytic role in the assembly of small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs), the building blocks of the spliceosome, and is essential for pre-mRNA splicing. Most spliceosomal snRNPs contain a common set of Sm proteins (SNRPB, SNRPD1, SNRPD2, SNRPD3, SNRPE, SNRPF, SNRPG) that form a heptameric ring on the Sm site of small nuclear RNA. In the cytosol, these Sm proteins are initially bound in an inactive 6S pICln-Sm complex by the chaperone CLNS1A. The SMN complex dissociates CLNS1A and facilitates the formation of the SMN-Sm complex, triggering core snRNP assembly and nuclear transport.
