Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a placental hormone that stimulates secretion of the pregnancy-sustaining steroid progesterone.
hCG belongs to a family of glycoprotein hormones including lutropin (LH), follitropin (FSH), and thyrotropin (TSH).
These hormones are disulfide-rich heterodimers composed of alpha- and beta-subunits. The alpha subunit is common among family members within a species, while the beta subunit confers receptor and biological specificity.
