Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a placental hormone that stimulates secretion of the pregnancy-sustaining steroid progesterone.
hCG belongs to a family of glycoprotein hormones including:
- Lutropin (Luteinizing hormone; LH)
- Follitropin (Follicle-stimulating hormone; FSH)
- Thyrotropin (Thyroid-stimulating hormone; TSH)
These hormones are disulfide-rich heterodimers composed of two dissimilar subunits (alpha and beta).
The alpha subunit is common among family members within a species, while the beta subunit provides receptor and biological specificity.
