Target Information
FITC (fluorescein isothiocyanate) is a fluorochrome dye that absorbs ultraviolet or blue light, causing molecules to become excited and emit visible yellow-green light. This emission ceases upon removal of the excitation light. Fluorochrome labeling enables rapid, accurate localization of antigen–antibody interactions when one reactant is part of a biological structure such as a cell or tissue.
FITC is commonly used as a marker for antibodies in immunofluorescent techniques because conjugation to proteins is relatively easy and generally preserves biological activity. It is also widely used as a hapten for labeling proteins. Anti-FITC antibodies can be used to isolate FITC-labeled cells via magnetic bead sorting or to reduce background signal.
