Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a placental hormone that stimulates secretion of the pregnancy-sustaining steroid progesterone.
hCG belongs to a family of glycoprotein hormones that includes pituitary hormones such as luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH).
These hormones are disulfide-rich heterodimers composed of two subunits (α and β). The α subunit is common among family members within a species, while the β subunit confers receptor and biological specificity.
