Target Information
Plasminogen is a plasma protein synthesized mostly in the liver. It consists of a single polypeptide chain with a molecular weight of approximately 88.5 kDa. The plasma concentration typically ranges from 70 to 200 mg/L.
Plasminogen is activated by tissue-plasminogen activator, urokinase, and streptokinase to form plasmin through cleavage and release of the preactivation peptide.
Plasmin comprises a heavy (A-) chain containing five kringles and a light (B-) chain with the active site. It is a trypsin-like protease that acts on fibrin, with fibrin-binding sites on the kringles.
Plasmin plays an essential role in fibrinolysis; congenital defects can lead to recurring thrombosis, thrombophlebitis, and pulmonary embolism.
