Target Information
Laminins are extracellular matrix glycoproteins that form a major noncollagenous component of basement membranes. They play roles in cell adhesion, differentiation, migration, signaling, neurite outgrowth, and metastasis. Laminin functions are mediated by cell surface receptors including integrins and non-integrin laminin-binding proteins.
This gene encodes a high-affinity laminin receptor (Laminin Receptor 1), also known as:
- 67 kD Laminin Receptor
- 37 kD Laminin Receptor Precursor (37LRP)
- p40 Ribosome-Associated Protein
The sequence of Laminin Receptor 1 is highly conserved, indicating its essential biological role. Its expression is elevated in colon carcinoma and lung cancer cells compared to normal tissues, correlating with increased invasiveness and metastatic potential. Multiple pseudogenes exist due to retropositional events, and two alternatively spliced transcripts encode the same protein.
