Target Information

Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is synthesized as a 31 kDa inactive pro-form and activated by inflammasome-mediated cleavage into a 17 kDa form via caspase-1. IL-1β lacks a classical secretion signal and is released through an alternate pathway. It signals through IL-1RI and IL-1RII receptors, shared with IL-1α, and its activity is moderated by IL-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1RA). IL-1β plays a key role in innate immunity, promoting other proinflammatory cytokines and acute-phase responses. Elevated IL-1β levels are linked to chronic inflammatory diseases, and neutralizing antibodies have therapeutic potential.
