Target Information
Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is synthesized as a 31 kDa inactive pro-form that accumulates in the cytosol and is cleaved into a 17 kDa active form via inflammasome activation. This process involves caspase-1 activation, which mediates the cleavage of pro-IL-1β. IL-1β lacks a classical signal peptide and is secreted through an alternate pathway alongside caspase-1. It signals through IL-1RI and IL-1RII receptors, shared with IL-1α, and its activity can be inhibited by IL-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1RA). IL-1β plays a critical role in innate immune responses and inflammation, with elevated levels linked to chronic inflammatory diseases. Neutralizing antibodies against IL-1β have potential therapeutic applications.
