Target Information
Glutathione peroxidases (Gpxs) are ubiquitously expressed proteins that catalyze the reduction of hydrogen peroxides and organic hydroperoxides by glutathione.
There are several isoforms differing in primary structure and localization:
- GPx1 (cGPx): Classical cytosolic/mitochondrial, selenium-dependent enzyme.
- GPx2 (GI-GPx): Expressed in gastrointestinal epithelium.
- GPx3 (pGPx): Extracellular plasma form, mainly expressed by kidney and released into blood circulation.
- GPx4 (PH-GPx): Reduces hydroperoxides in membranes and lipoproteins.
All mammalian GPx family members, except the Cys-containing GPx3 and epididymis-specific GPx5, possess selenocysteine at the active site.
