Target Information

This gene encodes a member of the vaccinia-related kinase (VRK) family of serine/threonine protein kinases. It is widely expressed in human tissues and shows increased expression in actively dividing cells such as those in testis, thymus, fetal liver, and carcinomas. The encoded protein localizes to the nucleus and promotes the stability and nuclear accumulation of transcriptionally active p53 by phosphorylating Thr18, thereby reducing p53 ubiquitination. It may regulate cell proliferation and can phosphorylate histone, casein, and transcription factors such as ATF2 and c-JUN.
