Target Information

STAT5 alpha is a member of the STAT family of transcription factors. In response to cytokines and growth factors, STAT proteins are phosphorylated by receptor-associated kinases, forming homo- or heterodimers that translocate to the nucleus to act as transcription activators.

STAT5 alpha mediates cellular responses to ligands such as IL2, IL3, IL7, GM-CSF, erythropoietin, thrombopoietin, and various growth hormones. Activation of STAT5 alpha, particularly in myeloma and lymphoma associated with TEL/JAK2 fusion, is independent of cell stimulus and essential for tumorigenesis.

In mice, STAT5 alpha induces BCL2L1/BCL-X(L) expression, suggesting antiapoptotic function. STAT5 alpha and STAT5 beta share 96% sequence similarity and are co-expressed in most tissues, though their mRNA accumulation differs among muscle and mammary tissues. STAT5 alpha plays critical roles in reproduction, lactation, immune function, and somatic growth.
