Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing tissue (such as skin) and non-keratinizing cells (such as mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs have been identified. Most members of the CK family belong to one of two classes:
- Type I (acidic polypeptides)
- Type II (basic polypeptides)
Keratin 14, part of the type I subfamily of low molecular weight keratins, forms complexes with keratin 5. It distinguishes stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells and serves as a useful marker for identifying squamous cell carcinomas. It is also considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas. At least one member of the acidic family and one member of the basic family are expressed in all epithelial cells.
