Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing (e.g., mesothelial) tissues. At least 20 different CKs are known, classified into type I (acidic) and type II (basic) families.
Keratin 14 (KRT14), a type I low molecular weight keratin, pairs with keratin 5 and serves as a marker distinguishing stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells. It is useful in identifying squamous cell carcinomas and is considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinoma.
All epithelial cells express at least one acidic and one basic cytokeratin.
