Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells found in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs have been identified, generally classified into two groups:
- Type I: acidic polypeptides
- Type II: basic polypeptides
Keratin 14 belongs to the type I subfamily of low molecular weight keratins and pairs with keratin 5. It serves as a marker to distinguish stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells and is useful for identifying squamous cell carcinomas. Additionally, it is considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas. Both acidic and basic keratin family members are expressed in all epithelial cells.
