Target Information

WNK1 serine/threonine kinase is a member of the WNK subfamily and may regulate blood pressure by controlling sodium and chloride ion transport. Mutations in WNK1 are linked to pseudohypoaldosteronism type II and hereditary sensory neuropathy type II.
WNK1 plays a crucial role in electrolyte homeostasis, cell signaling, survival, and proliferation. It acts as both activator and inhibitor of sodium- and potassium-coupled chloride cotransporters, respectively, and activates SCNN1A, SCNN1B, SCNN1D, and SGK1.
WNK1 localizes to the distal nephron, a kidney segment involved in salt, potassium, and pH homeostasis. Mutations in this gene can cause pseudohypoaldosteronism and neuropathy.
