Target Information
This gene encodes a multifunctional protein that resides in both the nucleus and cytoplasm. It interacts with various proteins, including apoptosis antigen Fas, centromere protein C, and transcription factor E26 oncogene homolog 1. In the nucleus, it acts as a potent transcription repressor that binds sumoylated transcription factors, and its repression can be relieved by sequestration into promyelocytic leukemia nuclear bodies or nucleoli. It also associates with centromeres during G2 phase. In the cytoplasm, the protein may regulate apoptosis. Its localization and function are modulated by post-translational modifications such as sumoylation, phosphorylation, and polyubiquitination. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
