- Suggested positive control: breast carcinoma.
Target Information
Estrogen Receptors (ER) belong to the steroid/thyroid hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors. The estrogen receptor functions as a ligand-activated transcription factor that, upon binding to estrogen, undergoes a conformational change allowing dimerization and binding to estrogen response elements (ERE) in DNA. This interaction regulates gene transcription by recruiting coactivator or corepressor proteins.
There are two forms of estrogen receptors, alpha and beta, encoded by separate genes (ESR1 and ESR2). Alternative RNA splicing produces multiple isoforms of ER-alpha (66 kDa, 53 kDa, 47 kDa, and 35 kDa). Estrogen receptors are expressed in various tissues and are essential for sexual development, reproductive function, and bone metabolism. They are implicated in diseases such as breast cancer, endometrial cancer, and osteoporosis.
