Target Information
Smooth Muscle Actin belongs to the actin family of proteins, which are highly conserved and play a critical role in cell motility, structure, and integrity.
Alpha, beta, and gamma actin isoforms are identified, with alpha actin being a major constituent of the contractile apparatus, while beta and gamma actins regulate cell motility.
Smooth muscle actin is an alpha actin found in skeletal muscle and is involved in filament formation within the cytoskeleton, interacting with myosin for muscle contraction, cell motility, and cytokinesis.
Smooth muscle actin is localized in smooth muscle vessel walls, gut wall, myometrium, and myoepithelial cells of breast and salivary glands.
Defects in the smooth muscle actin gene cause familial thoracic aortic aneurysm type 6.
Alpha-smooth muscle actin is abundant in vascular and visceral smooth muscle cells and appears in stress fibers of fibroblastic cells during wound healing and fibrocontractive diseases.
Multiple alternatively spliced variants of smooth muscle actin have been identified.
