Target Information
This gene encodes an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of angiotensin I into the physiologically active peptide angiotensin II. Angiotensin II acts as a potent vasopressor and aldosterone-stimulating peptide, regulating blood pressure and fluid-electrolyte balance. This enzyme plays a central role in the renin-angiotensin system. Variations in the presence or absence of a 287 bp Alu repeat element have been associated with circulating enzyme levels and cardiovascular conditions. Two major alternatively spliced variants encode the somatic and testicular isozymes, both active forms. Additional variants have been identified, though their full-length sequences are not fully characterized.
