Target Information
This gene encodes an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of angiotensin I into the physiologically active peptide angiotensin II. Angiotensin II is a potent vasopressor and aldosterone-stimulating peptide that regulates blood pressure and fluid-electrolyte balance. This enzyme plays a key role in the renin-angiotensin system. Variations in this gene, such as the presence or absence of a 287 bp Alu repeat element, have been associated with circulating enzyme levels and cardiovascular pathophysiologies. Two main alternatively spliced variants encode the somatic and testicular isozymes, both active forms. Additional splice variants have been identified, but their full-length sequences remain undetermined.
