Product Specific Information
This antibody reacts with human C-reactive protein (CRP), a pentameric protein found in blood plasma. It is an acute-phase reactive protein of hepatic origin and plays an important role in the body’s defense mechanisms. Its plasma concentration increases sharply during tissue damage, inflammation, and bacterial infection. CRP promotes agglutination, bacterial capsular swelling, phagocytosis, and complement fixation through calcium-dependent binding to phosphorylcholine. It can also interact with DNA and histones, potentially scavenging nuclear material released from damaged circulating cells.
Target Information
CRP (C-reactive protein) is a major cyclic, pentameric acute-phase protein composed of five identical, noncovalently bound, nonglycosylated subunits. Each subunit consists of 206 amino acids and has a molecular weight of approximately 24 kDa. CRP is produced in the liver, and its plasma levels rise dramatically during inflammation. It initiates the classical complement cascade, binds to nuclear components such as chromatin and histones, and plays an essential role in innate immunity. CRP levels can increase 100–1000 fold in response to injury, infection, or inflammation. It acts as an opsonin, complement activator, and monocyte/macrophage stimulator. Elevated basal CRP levels are associated with increased risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
