This antibody reacts with human C-reactive protein (CRP), a pentameric protein found in blood plasma. CRP is an acute-phase protein of hepatic origin that increases sharply during tissue damage, inflammation, or bacterial infection. It promotes agglutination, bacterial capsular swelling, phagocytosis, and complement fixation through calcium-dependent binding to phosphorylcholine. CRP can also interact with DNA and histones, scavenging nuclear material released from damaged cells.

Target Information

CRP (C-reactive protein) is a major cyclic, pentameric acute-phase protein composed of five identical, noncovalently bound, nonglycosylated subunits. Each subunit contains 206 amino acids with a molecular weight of approximately 24 kDa. Produced by the liver, CRP levels rise dramatically during inflammatory processes. It initiates the classical complement cascade, binds to nuclear components such as chromatin and histones, and plays a key role in innate immunity. CRP acts as an opsonin and activator of monocytes/macrophages, facilitating pathogen elimination. Elevated basal CRP levels are associated with increased risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
