Target Information

BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor) is a member of the neurotrophin family. It is synthesized as pre-proBDNF, then cleaved to proBDNF. Although further processing generates the mature 14 kDa protein, proBDNF is biologically active and secreted in synaptic vesicles along with the mature form.
BDNF is widely expressed in the central nervous system and acts on several classes of neurons via autocrine and paracrine signaling. The main receptor is TrkB, though it can also bind to the lower-affinity receptor p75-NTR.
BDNF promotes neuronal survival and differentiation and plays a critical role in memory formation and synaptic regulation. Expression is reduced in Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s disease patients and may influence stress response and mood disorder biology.
