Target Information
BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor) is a member of the neurotrophin family. It is synthesized as pre-proBDNF, then cleaved to proBDNF, and further processed to the mature 14 kDa protein. Both pro-BDNF and mature BDNF are biologically active and secreted in synaptic vesicles.
BDNF is widely expressed in the central nervous system and acts on several classes of neurons through the TrkB receptor and the lower-affinity receptor p75-NTR. It promotes neuronal survival and differentiation and plays a critical role in memory formation and synaptic regulation.
Reduced BDNF expression has been observed in Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s disease and may also be involved in stress response and mood disorder regulation.
