Target Information
The tumor suppressor protein p53 is a sequence-specific transcription factor activated by cellular stress. It mediates cell cycle arrest or apoptosis in response to DNA damage or nucleotide starvation. Phosphorylation at Ser15 is critical for p53 activation and stabilization. p53 plays a key role in blocking proliferation of damaged cells and acts as an anticancer factor. Mutations in the TP53 gene are common in many human cancers and are associated with loss of tumor suppressor activity. Germline mutations can also occur in cancer-prone families such as those with Li-Fraumeni syndrome.
