Target Information
Somatostatin exists in active 14 aa and 28 aa forms, produced by alternate cleavage of a single preproprotein. It is expressed throughout the body and inhibits the release of various secondary hormones via high-affinity G-protein-coupled receptors.
This hormone regulates the endocrine system by modulating pituitary growth hormone, thyroid stimulating hormone, and gastrointestinal hormones. It also influences neurotransmission and proliferation of normal and tumorigenic cells.
