Target Information

This gene encodes the receptor for type 1 gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). It belongs to the seven-transmembrane, G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) family and is expressed on the surface of pituitary gonadotrope cells, lymphocytes, breast, ovary, and prostate. Upon binding of GnRH, the receptor activates a phosphatidylinositol-calcium second messenger system, leading to the release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). Mutations in this gene can cause hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (HH). Multiple transcript variants and alternative splicing forms have been identified.
