Target Information
This gene encodes the receptor for type 1 gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH).
The receptor is a member of the seven-transmembrane, G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) family and is expressed on pituitary gonadotrope cells, lymphocytes, breast, ovary, and prostate.
Upon GnRH binding, it activates a phosphatidylinositol-calcium second messenger system, leading to release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH).
Mutations in this gene can cause hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (HH).
Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
