Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing tissues (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs are identified, generally classified into type I (acidic polypeptides) and type II (basic polypeptides).
Keratin 14 belongs to the type I subfamily and pairs with keratin 5, distinguishing stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells. It serves as a useful marker for squamous cell carcinomas and is considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas. Both acidic and basic keratin types are expressed in all epithelial cells.
