Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments found in epithelial cells, both keratinizing (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing (e.g., mesothelial cells). Over 20 CK types have been identified, classified as type I (acidic) and type II (basic) polypeptides.
Keratin 14, a type I low molecular weight keratin, forms complexes with keratin 5 and is characteristic of stratified epithelial cells. It serves as a useful marker for squamous cell carcinomas and is considered prognostic in breast carcinoma.
All epithelial cells express at least one acidic and one basic CK family member.
