Target Information
ALDH1A1 belongs to the aldehyde dehydrogenase family of proteins. It is the second enzyme in the major oxidative pathway of alcohol metabolism. Two major liver isoforms—cytosolic and mitochondrial—can be distinguished by electrophoretic mobility, kinetic properties, and subcellular localization.
Most Caucasians have both isoforms, while approximately 50% of Orientals possess only the cytosolic isozyme, lacking the mitochondrial form. This absence may relate to the higher frequency of acute alcohol intoxication among Orientals compared to Caucasians.
