Target Information
SMAD proteins are members of the MAD-related family, essential components in the signaling pathways of serine/threonine kinase receptors of the transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) superfamily.
They are classified as:
- Receptor-regulated SMADs (R-SMADs): SMAD1, 2, 5, 8, and 9
- Common-mediator SMAD (co-SMAD): SMAD4
- Inhibitory SMADs (I-SMADs): SMAD6 and 7
SMAD1, 5, 8, and 9 share high sequence homology, and antibodies may recognize common sequences among them. SMAD8 and SMAD9 are often used interchangeably in literature. Mutations in this gene can lead to pulmonary hypertension, primary 2 (PPH2).
