Target Information
Prostaglandins are produced by the metabolism of arachidonic acid. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) is one of five physiologically significant prostanoids. Its wide spectrum of physiologic and pharmacologic effects is mediated through binding to the Prostaglandin E2 receptors (EP1, EP2, EP3, and EP4). These effects include roles in immune, endocrine, cardiovascular, renal, and reproductive systems, as well as smooth muscle function.
PGE2 is abundant in the brain, where it contributes to neural functions and inflammation mediation. EP2 receptors are 358-amino-acid proteins that stimulate adenylyl cyclase via Gs coupling and do not undergo PGE2-induced internalization. EP2 receptors are mainly localized in lung, placental, and smooth muscle tissues, and are involved in contraction and relaxation of smooth muscle.
