Target Information
The c-Myc protein is a 62 kDa transcription factor encoded by the c-Myc gene on human chromosome 8q24. It is commonly activated in various tumor cells and plays a crucial role in cellular proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and cell cycle progression. Phosphorylation at Thr58/Ser62 by kinases such as GSK3, CDK, ERK2, and JNK regulates its function in proliferation and cell cycle control.
c-Myc is essential for vasculogenesis and angiogenesis during tumor development. Deregulated expression of c-Myc can induce apoptosis and is associated with multiple human cancers, including lung, breast, and colon carcinomas.
Translocation of the c-myc locus on chromosome 8 to immunoglobulin loci (chromosomes 14, 2, or 22) is characteristic of Burkitt’s lymphoma and other B-cell disorders. Aberrant c-myc expression occurs in tumors of various origins such as colorectal, gastric, hepatic, ovarian, and hematopoietic neoplasms.
