Product Specific Information
This antibody reacts with human alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP), a 70 kDa oncofetal antigen. AFP is a major fetal plasma protein not present in healthy adult tissues. Elevated AFP levels in adults may indicate hepatocellular carcinoma or teratoblastoma, while high AFP in amniotic fluid may suggest severe congenital defects.
This antibody has been successfully paired as the coating antibody in a sandwich ELISA with detection antibody MA1-19178 (clone AFP-01).
- Immunoprecipitation: Interaction of AFP-01 with AFP is calcium-dependent and inhibited by chelating agents. This property allows immunoaffinity purification of AFP under mild elution conditions.
- Western Blot: Recommended under non-reducing conditions.
Target Information
AFP (Alpha-Fetoprotein) is a major plasma protein produced by the yolk sac, intestinal tract, and liver during fetal life. In adults, AFP expression is often associated with hepatoma or teratoma. AFP is considered the fetal counterpart of serum albumin, and both genes are located in tandem on chromosome 4.
AFP exists in monomeric, dimeric, and trimeric forms and can bind copper, nickel, fatty acids, and bilirubin. AFP levels in amniotic fluid are used to screen for spina bifida and anencephaly. Elevated serum AFP levels are observed in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), teratoblastoma, colorectal, pancreatic cancers, and germ cell neoplasms.
