This antibody recognizes an extracellular epitope of CD83, a 40–45 kDa type I glycoprotein expressed on mature dendritic cells.

Target Information

CD83 is a 40–45 kDa glycoprotein expressed by peripheral blood dendritic cells. Peripheral lymphocytes can express low levels of CD83 after stimulation with agents such as Con A or PHA. In immunohistology, CD83 is strongly expressed by interfollicular interdigitating reticulum cells and more weakly by cells within germinal centres. CD83 is also expressed by Langerhans cells in the skin.

The CD83 antigen is a 186-amino-acid single-chain glycoprotein and a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily. It consists of an extracellular V-type Ig-like domain, a transmembrane region, and a short cytoplasmic tail. CD83 undergoes extensive post-translational glycosylation, resulting in a molecular weight approximately twice that of the core protein. CD83⁺ cells coexpress high levels of MHC class II molecules and markers from multiple leukocyte lineages, including T cell (CD2, CD5), B cell (CD40, CD78), and myeloid (CD13, CD33, CD36) markers. Diseases associated with CD83 dysfunction include plague and Rift Valley Fever.
