The ENPP2 gene encodes a protein with dual enzymatic functions:
- Acts as a phosphodiesterase, cleaving phosphodiester bonds at the 5’ end of oligonucleotides.
- Functions as a phospholipase, catalyzing production of lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) in extracellular fluids.
LPA mediates growth factor-like responses such as:
- Stimulation of cell proliferation
- Chemotaxis
- Tumor cell motility
- Angiogenesis
Expression of this gene is upregulated in several carcinomas. The protein is secreted and processed into its biologically active form. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants exist, encoding different isoforms.
