CD16 encodes a receptor that recognizes the Fc portion of immunoglobulin G and plays a role in immune complex clearance, antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity, and viral infection enhancement.
FCGR3A shares high similarity with FCGR3B located on chromosome 1.

Mutations in FCGR3A are associated with Immunodeficiency 20, Herpes Zoster, and susceptibility to lupus erythematosus and recurrent viral infections.
