Target Information
The Apolipoprotein B mRNA-editing enzyme-catalytic polypeptide-like (APOBEC) 3 family is a group of cytidine deaminases acting on monomeric nucleoside and nucleotide substrates. APOBEC3G, along with APOBEC3F, contributes to cellular defense against retroviral infection by being incorporated into HIV-1 virions and inducing hypermutation in viral DNA, destabilizing the viral genome. The HIV-1 Vif protein counteracts this defense by promoting ubiquitination and degradation of APOBEC3G. A single amino acid substitution (D128K) prevents APOBEC3G depletion while maintaining its antiviral activity.
