Target Information
The UGT1A1 gene encodes a UDP-glucuronosyltransferase enzyme involved in the glucuronidation pathway, which converts small lipophilic molecules (e.g., steroids, bilirubin, hormones, and drugs) into water-soluble, excretable metabolites.
This gene is part of a complex locus encoding multiple UDP-glucuronosyltransferases with distinct N-termini and shared C-termini.
The preferred substrate is bilirubin, though it also acts on phenols, flavones, and C18 steroids.
Mutations are associated with Crigler-Najjar syndrome types I and II and Gilbert syndrome.
