Target Information

Excitatory amino acid transporter 2 (EAAT2) is a membrane-bound solute transporter responsible for clearing the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate from the extracellular space at central nervous system synapses. Proper glutamate clearance is essential for synaptic activation and prevention of neuronal damage from excessive glutamate receptor activation. Mutations or reduced expression of EAAT2 are linked to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified.
