FBJ murine osteosarcoma viral oncogene homolog, commonly known as Cellular proto-oncogene Fos (c-Fos), belongs to the fos transcription factor family and is encoded by the C-FOS gene on chromosome 14.
c-Fos forms a heterodimer with c-Jun to create the Activator Protein-1 (AP-1) transcription factor, which regulates gene transcription involved in signal transduction, cell proliferation, and differentiation.
Phosphorylation occurs at multiple sites via stimuli such as growth factors and insulin. ERK MAPK is a major upstream kinase for phosphorylation at Threonine 232, influencing nuclear localization and transcriptional activity of c-Fos.
